What is Google Thinking?

I Just read a very well written and insightful SEO article regarding Google. Specifically regarding Google and it’s recent algorithm and Infrastructure upgrades. Jim Hedger has gone into depth explaining his view of what impact the recent Google updates have on the Search Engine Optimization industry and the clients that utilize their services.

“In September 2005, Google began implementation of a three-part algorithm update that became known as the Jagger Update. Shortly after completing the algo update in late November, Google began an upgrading of their server and data storage network that was dubbed the Bigdaddy Infrastructure Upgrade.

“After the implementation of the algo update and infrastructure upgrades, SEOs have seen changes in the following areas: Site/Document Quality Scoring, Duplicate Content Filtering and Link Intention Analysis.

The bulk of the article focuses on what Google is now looking for in terms of establishing relevancy and trust of a document (this is how rankings are determined).

“There are two basic rules in regards to content. It should be there to inform and assist the site user’s experience and it should be, (in as much as possible), original.â€?

“In order to ferret out the intent of webmasters, Google has increased the importance of links, both inbound and outbound. Before the updates, an overused tactic for strong placement at Google saw webmasters trying to bulk up on incoming links from where ever they could. This practice saw the rise of link farms, link exchanges and poorly planned reciprocal link networks.

These are the thing we as a Search Engine Optimization company face. We strive to understand what this entity called Google is looking for and then deliver to the benefit of our clients rankings. Staying abreast of the latest SEO strategies is how we as a company earn our income. In essence you are paying for a small service (the optimization of your website) that takes volumes of specialized knowledge to perform. Like a doctor wishing to keep thier skills sharp, we are always learning more to stay up to date in our skill set.

Search to Sales

The Shift to Search

Well by now most business owners know that in some form or fashion, the internet plays a role in their success. The internet has become the preferred method of consumers to research prior to making a buying decision. If a general consumer is seeking to purchase a digital camera, there are sites specifically dedicated to rating cameras. But what if the consumer did not know that site existed. They would use a search engine to seek out that information.

They would use Google, Yahoo, or MSN, and simply type in a few words like “digital cameras” or “best digital cameras”. Up would come the list of relevant sites, and away they go viewing the results until finding what they want. You do this yourself. We all do. So much in fact that “Search” is becoming the primary way to navigate the internet. Remembering URL’s is so 90’s, www.domain.com has been replaced with AOL keywords, and 3-4 word descriptors used as search queries.

Pontiac Knows Search

No where is this shift to Search better demonstrated then a recent Pontiac commercial. At the end of the commercial, the announcer does not speak aloud the domain, “pontiac.com“, nor does it appear on the screen. The commercial briefly shows a screenshot of the Google home page with the word “pontiac” in the search bar. A subtle image telling the viewer to simply search for the word, and you will find them. [View commercial] This is a powerful message as more and more internet users have forgotten or never knew that an address bar was the place to type in an exact destination. Essentially (to a growing number of consumers) you do not exist, unless you appear in search results.

Search Engine Optimization

So if consumers are searching for your business type, i.e. “pool remodeling in arizona” rather than your company by name “abcpools.com” it is important that your website appears when searched for. As an example, our prospects have no clue what our name is, yet they know what they want in a web design company. Hence we have tried to assist them in finding us, by optimizing (SEO) our website for top rankings for terms our desired prospects would search for.

search rankings
This ranking, and many like it, bring a constant flow of warm prospects seeking our services. Many times our prospect has no idea that we exist until they see us listed at the top of a list they requested. Consumers are searching for you, but are you being found?

The investment in SEO is nearly mandatory now, as the niche’s are quickly being filled and the sheer numbers of competition provide a barrier of entry to any site hoping to get lucky. Consider SEO as a integral part of a website plan. No matter how nice it looks and how well in functions, you do not exist unless you appear in search results.

Why your competition isnt

Everyone who owns a business does what they do for different reasons and motives. You may sell cars, build houses or provide professional services. Whatever you’re doing, there’s this common belief that your business must compete in a pre-defined space and that others in this same space have to be beaten. You’re supposed to out-smart, out-sell, out-position or otherwise destroy others who share your same market.

I beg to differ and will use my own company as an example. We provide professional level web design, development and search engine optimization services and what do you know? There are thousands of other companies claiming to do just the same. Are they my competition? I say “no”. This company has no competition.

This company…

  • Is directed by a singular purpose: service. We serve; we don’t sell.
  • Focuses on market creation, not market share.
  • Never takes no for an answer.
  • Considers its greatest investment the minds of the employees.
  • Sets and achieves daily goals for success.
  • Adapts to be relevant to both client needs and technological advances.
  • Operates from a psychology of excellence.

Does this sound like a company that has competitors? These are my statements and thoughts of how I perceive this company. This perception does not allow room for comparison.

Do you think that if you thought of your company this way as well, whether you sell cars or build pools, that in your mind a comparison could ever be made between your company and another? Of course not. I suggest you stop worrying about your “competition as they only exist in your own mind. There are always going to be people doing the same work as you and even doing it better in some aspect. Only you decide if you are going to fear, envy, or compete against them. Don’t try to be like them; create your own vision and be the one and only company like it.

This company does not have competition and neither does yours. The perceived notion of competition is that you are just like them, or in fact worse – because they are doing it better than you. Are they better than you? Who says: them or you?

A Journey Through Design

Well it has been about a week since our new site went live. And what a week it has been. I thought it would be a good idea to share some thoughts on how we got here, as well as some of the great feedback we have recieved in response to the website.

In the Beginning..

We started this new design over 6 months ago. We identified the need early that it had to be clean, sleek, and memorable. There are a fair amount of web design companies in Arizona, and we wanted to stand out, and leave no mistake in the minds of the consumer what our capabilities are. The design essentially went through 3 iterations, until finally settling on the black on black.

Markup Madness

We spent over 5 weeks, off and on, just building the first page. We were determined to build a XHTML Valid, table-less layout. Not always easy considering the variations between Internet Explorer, and everything else. Search Engine Optimization is also a primary focus of our business, therefore the order of the markup was especially important. The extreme left column with the logo is actually the last thing the search engine spider sees. Instead it crawls from the top of the “middle column, then to the right, and back to the left. This order was used to ensure that the spiders picked up our headlined copy as soon as they hit the page.

The endless bug squashing and css hackery was tiresome at times, as like all designers, we bemoaned Internet Explorer’s complete lack of CSS goodness.

The Media is the Message

As part of our new positioning, we determined that it was best to streamline our service offerings, and therefore came up with the “3 things message. Too often I believe web design companies (yes we did it too) try to be everything to every client. We asked ourselves what our strengths were, and what components are really needed in every website for the client to achieve positive Return on investment. We strive to ensure that all all our clients win.

Get Crafty

We are not ready to quite let the cat out of the bag yet on the development framework used to create the new website. Some will be able to guess, yet we can tell everyone that we are about 90% complete developing some killer additions to an already great product. More on that when our development dept. is ready to spill the beans.

The Debut

The new launch happened to coincide with the May 1st Reboot, and the Spring 2006 CSS Reboot. We participated in both and had a very strong showing. There were some voting problems on the may1streboot site, and for 3 days people were unable to vote for our company. Regardless we are/finished in the top 10% of both showcases. It was a great experiance and we enjoyed it very much.

The Reaction

  • “There’s always a place for clean lines.” – Adam Howell
  • “..the ones that had the most impact and interest to me” – Tammie Lister
  • “A very sleek design. This is what color “black” does when done right.” – CSS Drive
  • “Stunning” – Shanti Braford
  • “Wow, Really great work” – Aaron Post

What’s Next.

We have few design related things left to do on the website, but mostly we will be refining our CMS enhancements. The new website is a launching pad for our new positioning. We feel now that our website conveys our strengths, and showcases our talent. Time to get out there and shake some hands, the next deal of the decade is right around the corner. obu is coming, and we are coming in hot.

Luckily, one of the news articles did mention the web site address. It is a very beautiful site, pleasing to the eye and ear. It was created as a Macromedia Flash presentation which is embedded into a single web page. Why did I have so much trouble finding it? I think it might have something to do with the fact that the creators of the site don’t seem to understand SEO.

How does a web site get into search engines’ listings? The major search engines use computer programs (commonly called robots or crawlers) to follow links from one page to another and retrieve the contents of each page. The contents are indexed and added to the search engines’ databases.

Rebooters Ball

We participated in the Spring 2006 CSSreboot, where many designers relaunch new designs all in one day. All the designs submited are voted on by the masses.

Let us first say, WOW, what an interesting experiance. There were thousands of designs submitted, from every corner of the design spectrum. The quality of work was amazing. The voting seemed a bit off as some really great sites were overlooked, and some not so steller ones were voted to the top. I am sure the well known designers rode a bit of thier popularity to the top, yet I am sure many took some spiteful knocks as well.

Regardless, obuweb.com had a strong showing, consistently among the top 10% or so. I am proud of my efforts, and the efforts of our staff here at obu, that created this sexy new website we call home.

Here is a list of what I consider to be a few of the overlooked gems

All in all, it was a great experiance. Now back to work serving our valued customers.

5 Tips for the SEO Beginnner

By Joshua Strebel | www.obuweb.com

Search Engine Optimization is really about doing one thing, building relevancy for your website. Sites that have top rankings, are deemed to be the most relevant for that search term. The search engines look a few things when determining relevancy, here is a quick list to get the beginner SEO started.

1. Choose 2 or 3 “keyword phrases” describing your product
or service. Think of a phrase someone would use to search for
a website like yours. “Phoenix Web Design or “Metal Buildings“. Try to strike
a balance between being too broad, or too specific. Too broad and
you will be buried among the competition, Too focused you limit
your audience.

2. Use relevant keyword phrases and use them throughout
your web site Title, Description, Keywords, Links, and Copy. This
is called “Keyword
Density
“. Be mindful not to overdo it, write for the human first.

3. Use the H1-H6, P tags to organize content into logical sections. Open a section with a keyword title in a H2 tag, and discuss that topic within a P tag below.

4. Obtain quality inbound links (IBL) with keyword rich anchor
text to your site. Search Engines love links,
your web site is given “points” by the quality of links
to your site. Anchor Text is the linked text that is actually
highlighted. So Professional Web Design is
the Anchor text of a link pointing to http://obuweb.com. You
may approach other sites to offer a “link exchange”, or buy links on other sites. Relevancy
counts, so try to avoid Viagra links unless you deal in pharmacy/medical
products. High profile IBL’s also greatly enhance your
search engine positioning. A link from Amazon.com to your
site is tops, while a link from joestrouthaus.com is not
given as much wieght.

5. Participate in online forums, or discussion boards, and BLOG. This will help you
get your name/website out there, say something useful and add to the community. By participating on a positive level you will build incoming links and audience.
